Girls and Goals Initiative is dedicated to empowering adolescents and youth, especially girls, in underserved communities across Nigeria. We provide the tools, education, and resources they need to thrive, focusing on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, and education access. Our holistic approach ensures that young people not only understand their rights but also have the confidence to advocate for themselves and their futures.
We believe empowerment begins with education and awareness. That’s why we partner with schools, communities, and local leaders to integrate comprehensive sexuality education and menstrual hygiene programs into everyday learning. From distributing sanitary pads to organizing school tours and creating peer educator networks, we are building a future where no girl is left behind.
Girls and Goals Initiative is powered by a passionate team of volunteers, educators, and advocates committed to driving change. Over the years, we’ve reached thousands of young people through school tours, community projects, and targeted campaigns. With every pad distributed and every girl supported, we take a step closer to breaking taboos, addressing inequalities, and ensuring all girls have the opportunity to succeed.
Together, we are rewriting the narrative for girls in Nigeria—one project, one school, and one community at a time.
Girls and Goals Initiative was founded by Alu Mary Ojima, a passionate advocate for adolescent and youth reproductive health. Born and raised in Northern Nigeria in an all-girls family, Mary experienced firsthand the silence and taboos surrounding sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Navigating menstruation without guidance or clear information was a confusing and isolating experience for her. These challenges inspired her lifelong mission to break these taboos and ensure that no girl feels unsupported during such pivotal stages of life.
Mary is a graduate of Prince Abubakar Audu University, where she earned a degree in Clinical Biochemistry. She went on to obtain a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Bingham University and holds multiple certifications, including Adolescents’ Health, Reproductive Health, and Comprehensive Sexuality Education from UNESCO, as well as Monitoring and Evaluation from the University of Washington’s EDGH program.
Mary’s vision for Girls and Goals Initiative was born out of her deep conviction that young girls deserve access to accurate information, resources, and supportive networks to navigate their reproductive health and education. What began as a personal passion has grown into a movement that has empowered thousands of girls through school tours, community outreach, and impactful projects addressing menstrual hygiene, SRH education, and education access.
Mary believes that every girl has the right to thrive, regardless of societal barriers or stigmas. Through Girls and Goals Initiative, she continues to advocate tirelessly for a world where girls can navigate puberty and adolescence with dignity, knowledge, and confidence.
